Rising Star: Gemma Correll

With her distinctive style, 25-year old freelance illustrator Gemma Correll is making huge waves in the design industry. "I use Photoshop A LOT," she says. "I love the freedom that it allows me – to play around with colour and texture."

'Quirky', 'distinctive' and 'unforgettable' – just three words that we'd use to describe the illustrative style of UK up-and-coming illustrator Gemma Correll. " Other people have described my style as 'Naive', 'Childlike' and 'The perfect combination of ugly and cute' she laughs. "The childlike style does come naturally to me, although I'm not sure what that says about me personally."

With a UK and international client base, including everything from well-known publications such as The Guardian, to more obscure periodicals such as Mexico's Baby Baby Baby magazine and Argentinian mag Chikismiqui, it seems as though art directors across the world are itching to see more of Correll. "I have also designed T-shirts for companies including Urban Outfitters, Hot Topic, Threadless and umbrellas for a company based in Hong Kong," she says of her style's versatility. "I also produce a lot of personal work and make my own products, such as printed cards and zines, painted ceramics and textile items.

My favourite Photoshop tools would have to be the oldies-but-goodies – the Magic Wand and Hue/Saturation tools," she continues, starting to reveal her working methods. "I also love the Linear Burn tool, which really helps to create a clean join when you're using line with colour fills." Correll also works in Illustrator when creating large-scale designs, and cites the ability to switch between Illustrator and Photoshop quickly – using Smart Objects – as a massive time-saver.

"I'm working on a couple of interesting editorial commissions at the moment as well as some fabric designs for a project that includes some of my favourite illustrators," she says. "I'm also preparing to take part in a group exhibition in Antwerp called Art Trek 6, which starts in August and the InkyGoodness 'Wonderland' exhibition at Birmingham's Custard Factory in September. I'm hoping to work on some more, varied projects within some new disciplines for me such as advertising and animation – and just generally make lots of new work for lots of lovely clients!"

Creative Suite comparisons – helping you upgrade

With so many features added in each new release of Creative Suite, it can become rather baffling working out just what's changed since you last upgraded. Luckily, Adobe has launched a site that will tell you exactly what you're missing out on…

Ever wondered what the benefits are in upgrading to CS4 from your current version of Creative Suite? Well, Adobe has added an invaluable resource to adobe.com/uk that enables you to see at-a-glance why you should be upgrading.

You may still be using Creative Suite Standard, or even CS2; or maybe you're studio is based around a CS3 workflow. With so many features being added in each new release, it can be somewhat confusing to gauge the exact plus points of moving to CS4. However, the new Design Premium, Web Premium and Production Premium version comparison sites enable you to quickly find out what features have been added since you last upgraded.

Using a simple dropdown menu, choose the version of Creative Suite you're using and the page changes contextually to show you the great features in CS4 that you're missing out on. Click on the feature links for more information – including videos – on how that particular feature can benefit your workflow.

"This is a really useful tool for any designers or studios looking to upgrade," said Rob Carney, Editor of Computer Arts magazine. "It makes it a cinch to quickly see what features have been added to CS4 and exactly what they do."

So, if you're not yet aware of how multiple artboards in Illustrator will change the way you work; or the fact you can now, in Photoshop, zoom to individual pixels and easily edit images at the highest magnification, take a look at the comparison sites – you might just find a feature that could shave hours off your next project.
